Colonial clothing issues

Well, I may have set a goal I have to give up on.  I wanted to create authentic wardrobes for the historic American Girl dolls.  Now I am getting hung up on trying to get too authentic.

Kaya would have gone naked to play or sleep or she would have worn a breech cloth like the boys.  No fun sewing that!

Now I learn that Felicity would have worn a short shift under her dresses, but no underwear.  I thought they wore pantaloons, but they didn't!  They also went for long periods of time without bathing or washing their clothes.  That is why they had the aprons and shawls, and the different fronts for their bodices.  They wore the mop caps and pinners to keep their hair clean longer.

I guess deep down I knew this on an intellectual level.  They didn't have indoor plumbing with hot water.  Taking a bath would have meant hauling the water inside, heating it, bathing, then taking the dirty water outside again.  Many families bathed using the same water for the whole family.  Boy, I would hate to be last!

There are some good lessons girls can learn with their dolls and their stories for reference.  Just look what all I am learning in trying to sew authentic garments.
